I have a closet full of once-worn gowns
And a locker full of single-pair shoes. 
An unlikely optimist, I leave my calling cards--
Sometimes a left shoe, sometimes a right--
At parties, I turn up at work
In mismatched sandals, but hey, 
They say, all's fair in love and war.
But the price of battle is two pence
Too much and now I'm out of space, money and patience.

For there is neither spark nor joy here anymore.

I swore to let go and accept that
Amphibians cannot morph into suitable boys. 
But first, can I please have a moment of silence
For the dear-departed charms of long-lost princes?
Can I please give them a hug and a little kiss
Before I throw the frogs out?

“No!” I said quickly, You both are still my true loves! It’s just that with this pandemic, I don’t need shoes… I hardly go out!
My shoes accepted what I’d said, and went back to their Rip Van Winkle sleep, when suddenly they were rudely awakened as with spit and polish I decided to make them shine again.
