थे और ही वो रात-ओ-दिन के अब वो बात नहीं
हुआ था इश्क़ जिससे तुझे कभी अब वो 'मैं' मैं नहीं

वो फ़िज़ा, वो समां, वो बयार-ए-इश्क़ थी जो चली
न अब वो मौसम न सावन, वो रातें वो जाड़े हैं नहीं

रंग गालों का गाढ़ा वो आँखों की मदहोश कहानियाँ
न बातों में शहद रहे अब, उजली मुस्कुराहटें अब नहीं

झुकती नज़रों पर जो लिखे नग़मे अश्कों संग धुल गए
चहकती हँसी पे वो फ़िक़रे वो तराने होंगे और कहीं

यूँ ग़म कई बीते ज़मानों के, यूँ ग़म किसी बात का नहीं
यूँ ज़िंदगी नाम मोहब्बत के, यूँ नाम कहीं मोहब्बत का नहीं

Smoke rises from the palms
Of my burnt, wounded hands,
As raindrops kiss the skin,
Rising up, forming foggy clouds,
Greying the burning bright blues.

Had I not plucked those stars,
From the sleepless night skies,
Hiding them inside my chest,
How would have I gifted you,
These salt and pepper skies!

The saturation of mind,
The brink of thoughts,
An outset, A threshold,
Much like Space, the cosmos.

The capability, the coherency
To comprehend or logicize,
Lost in the void of clutter,
Of thoughts, of memoirs.

Holding the entire Universe,
Cluster of stars and galaxies,
Yet blocked for sound,
For dimensions to foresee.

आओ आज एक ज़िद्दी मुल्क़ की मिट्टी तुम्हे चखाएंगे,
गिरते जाएं हौंसले भले, और पुल भी नए ढह जाएंगे,
पर मंदिर तो बनवाएंगे

उन दीवारों पे पत्थर रखकर नक्काशी करवाएंगे,
फ़िर नक्काशी के फ़ूल तोड़ कर 'अल्लाह हू' लिखवाएंगे,

Expected I was,
to be a Phoenix.
Live, tarnish, burn,
Rise from ashes, repeat!

I instead,
turned out a Blue Jay.
Born fervent, untamed,
to set them down, depleat.

एक कटोरी भर मैं रात लाऊं, तुम अंजलि ख़्वाबों की भरना ज़रा
आज बालकॉनी में सितारों की एक चटाई लेना तुम बिछा,

मेरे हाथ से छटक कर क़िताब, मुझे घूर लेना इक बार ज़रा,
फ़िर हाथ मेरा लंबा करके, बाँह पे अपना सर देना टिका,

जब खेलूँ तुम्हारी बाली से तो उँगली से होंठ छेड़ दूँ ज़रा,
तुम शर्मा कर चेहरा अपना, मेरी छाती में लेना दबा,

बस भर के तुमको गिरफ़्त में, हाथों की लूँ ज़ंजीर बना,
चूम के पेशानी को तुम्हारी, हल्का सा दूँ मैं भी मुस्कुरा

तुम भांप के शरारत भरी मुस्कान, छुड़ाने लगो ख़ुद को ज़रा
आँखों में हरारत भरके मैं, देखूँ अब तुम्हे यूँ एक दफ़ा,

नैनों के अपने आँचल तले, तुम हया की लोरी देना सुना
मैं भी ज़रा जी भरके आज, हिमाकतें अपनी लूँ आज़मा,

एक हाथ बढ़ा कर आसमान को, चाँद का सूरज दूँ बुझा,
तुम मीच करके आँखें अपनी, मेरी रात जला देना ज़रा।

Going down has never been
As ecstatic and rhapsodic,
When I'm down the lane,
Of memories, blissful.

The green sidewalks,
Yellowed with flowers
That trees of Amaltas,
Have been shedding,
Welcoming the walkers.

I hold my favorite hand,
Pale, wrinkled but study.
With stories from past,
Freedom struggle, Migration,
Life in Pakistan, of ghosts.

I still wonder what was worth;
Picking up flowers from the
Lane, or the stories!

As they sit down,
Listening to life swiftly
Moving at a pace unmatched,
Their hands lock automatically.

And that's how they reconcile,
The five decades they'd spent together,
Seeing the world through their hands, while
Their hearts could only recognize each other!

न मैं दायरों में,
न मेरे लफ्ज़ अशआरों में,
बंधना सीख पाए हैं।

मेरी हर रात अमावस,
हर शब-ओ-सहर पर,
बीते कल के साए हैं।

जीया हूँ तन्हा अब तक,
मरघट पर सब लोग देखो,
मुझे अलविदा कहने आए हैं।
